Taking a Trip Back in Time for VE Day Celebrations

To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, our residents enjoyed a heartfelt day of remembrance, celebration and community spirit, all from the comfort of our welcoming lounges. The team planned a series of engaging and nostalgic activities, allowing everyone to reflect, connect, and enjoy the day in good company.

Our residents began the day by taking part in themed Oomph activity sheets and joined in a joyful sing-along with our regular musical guest, Julie Sings, whose familiar tunes helped bring back treasured memories. We then carried on the day by welcoming children from our local nursery, Little Explorers. They dressed in red, white and blue and brought smiles and laughter as they sat with residents to colour in VE Day pictures and sing a blend of classic and modern nursery rhymes. This intergenerational activity brought real warmth to the day, with many residents commenting on how wonderful it was to see the different generations come together.

We worked closely with the Hinckley and District Past and Present group, who kindly shared photographs and stories from VE Day celebrations in Hinckley back in 1945. These sparked conversation and memories among residents, some of whom remembered that historic day and were keen to share their own recollections.

No celebration would be complete without a fitting spread, and our catering team truly outdid themselves. A special buffet tea was served, complete with a patriotic cake and a menu inspired by wartime dishes from 1945. The effort and care put into the day were deeply appreciated by both residents and their families.

This VE Day event was not only a moment to remember history but also a reminder of the joy that comes from being part of a close-knit and caring community. If you’d like to find out more about life at our care home in Hinckley or arrange a visit to see our warm and welcoming community in person, please get in touch today. We’d love to show you around.
